The subject of driving had always left me cold and impassive; cars could stay on the road and I would stay on the pavement or look on from the train window. A combination of anxiety and disdain underpinned this. It wasn’t for me and that was just the way of things. Nigel took on my antipathy patiently and nonetheless turned me into a safe and capable driver over sixty hours or so. Notwithstanding this I did spend a good eight hours doing the one left turn nursery sequence as I couldn’t fathom out the clutch yet he didn’t give up on me. His modus operandi is to teach the art of driving rather than how to game a test. Variety and joy are also crucial; scenic routes and bucolic lanes and byways often feature. Nigel is a storyteller and great wit; he can have you in peals of laughter whilst ironing out the rollback in your hill-start. He’s an absolute workhorse and stalwart professional; not once did he cancel any of our planned lessons over the better part of a year and always managed to be there at least five minutes before me. If the idea of driving fills you with dread as it did me give Nigel a look-in, you shan’t regret it. |
